(leaving Santa Fe at 7:00 AM)

Los Luceros is a scenic and beautiful historic site on the Rio Grande. The trip affords easy walking past historic buildings and through fields, an orchard, a trail through the bosque, the Rio Grande, and a pond. The site is an Audubon Important Bird Area because of the variety of habitats and the resulting variety of birds. We might get some fall migrants, but we should be able to see a relatively large number of year-round residents including Lewis’s Woodpeckers.

Entry is free for New Mexico residents on the first Sunday of every month when the site opens from “Dawn ‘Til Dusk.” You might be asked for your zip code or your ID with a New Mexico address. If not a New Mexico resident, the admission charge is $7.00. We should be done birding by 10:30 or 11:00 am, but if you haven’t visited the property before you may want to take advantage of seeing the historic buildings that are open to the public.

There are two options for joining the group. The first is to meet at 7:00 am at DeVargas Mall in Santa Fe in front of Starbucks, where we can make carpool arrangements. The second option is to meet at the Visitor Center at Los Luceros at 8:00 am. Directions to Los Luceros: If arriving from the south through Española, take State Road 68 north about eleven miles to Alcalde then turn left onto CR48, Los Luceros Road.

The trip is first-come, first-serve and limited to 12 participants. Contact Rick Rockman by phone, voicemail, or email (preferred) if interested in the trip. Please include your email address and phone number in the request. A waiting list will be created, if necessary. His contact info is rockmanrjr@gmail.com or 505-660-9972.
